Spicy Roasted Chickpeas

Crisp and crunchy spicy roasted chickpeas recipe to quell hunger between meals or while watching the big game.

Crispy, crunchy snacks are some of the most satisfying, and these spicy roasted chickpeas fall square in that category. Great to grab by the handful, and pretty darn addictive, these spicy little gems are easy to make at home anytime the need for a snack arises.

In the store, readymade roasted chickpeas can cost a fortune, and frankly, you don't get many in a bag. Why waste all that money when roasting them at home is quick and easy. You don't even need an air fryer, though that can make the preparation even easier.

Naturally, these chickpeas are completely vegan and gluten-free. They are healthier than a bag of chips, and the flavour can be customised any way you want. Try using barbeque flavourings, or readymade seasoning powders like ranch or spice mixes.

Ingredients

(Makes 2 servings)

  • 1, 540ml can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400°F / 200°C. Prepare a sheet pan by lining it with parchment paper or silicone liner. Set aside.

In a small mixing bowl combine the garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, cayenne pepper, and sea salt. Mix well and set aside.

Rinse and drain the chickpeas, then in batches, use a tea towel or paper towel to dry the chickpeas well. Transfer the dried chickpeas to a medium mixing bowl and drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkle on the spices. Toss in the bowl to coat all the chickpeas evenly.

Spread the chickpeas in a single layer onto the sheet pan and roast for 18 to 20 minutes. Mix the chickpeas around and put them back into the oven for an additional 15 minutes or until they are brown and at the level of crunchiness you desire.

Remove the chickpeas from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy immediately or wait until completely cooled then store in an airtight container.
