Mulled Wine
Always festive, this mulled wine recipe is the perfect adult beverage for the holidays.
Mulled wine is a warm and wonderfully aromatic holiday drink that brings together all of the flavours of the holidays in one glass. It can be made as simple or complex as you wish. The aroma as this is being made is just incredible and will quickly fill your home with the holiday spirit.
It works especially well when using a Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, or Petit Verdot, but your favourite red wine will do just fine. It reminds me a lot of a warn sangria that's been dressed up for the holidays.
Ingredients
(Makes 8 servings)
1 bottle of red wine (Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, etc.)
1/2 cup monkfruit baking sweetener
1 orange, thinly sliced width wise
1 apple, thinly sliced width wise
1/2 cup cranberries
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Spice infusion:
1/2 cup vodka
2 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
12 whole cloves
12 raisins
4 dried juniper berries
4 whole cardamom pods
sliced peel from 1 small orange
1/2-inch piece of ginger, peeled
Garnishes (optional):
slivered almonds
raisins
cinnamon sticks
Directions
Infuse vodka with spices by placing them all in an airtight container and let them soak overnight (or up to 5 days).
In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the wine, infused spices, fruit, rosemary, sweetener and vanilla, then heat, stirring periodically, until it is just under the boiling point. Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool somewhat, to the point where its still warm, but not too hot to safely drink.
Serve with some of the fruits from the saucepan, fresh or dehydrated orange slices, along with other festive garnishes.
