Hurricane Cocktail
The fruity and delicious hurricane cocktail for Mardi Gras or all summer long!
The Hurricane Cocktail is a popular, tropically fruity alcoholic beverage that originated in 1940s New Orleans. It is typically served in a tall, curvy hurricane glass, but this is totally optional (and really pretty). It's a particular favourite during Mardi Gras, and throughout the summer.
This recipe is the version I like best, but there are variations depending on who is mixing the drinks. A lot of the time simple syrup is added. I find it makes the drink too sweet. It already contains sweet juices and sweetener.
If alcoholic beverages are not for you, all is not lost. There are some really excellent non-alcoholic rums available. They are a bit pricy, but then again so is a good quality rum. My two favourite substitutes are Lyre's White Cane Spirit to replace white rum, and Lyre's Dark Cane Spirit to replace the dark rum. The cheapest substitution for the rum in this cocktail would be a couple of teaspoons of rum extract with additional juice (like white grape or apple) to replace the volume of liquid.
This recipe only makes a small batch, but feel free to multiply it for larger gatherings and serve it up in a punch bowl.
Ingredients
(Makes 8 servings)
1 cup passion fruit juice
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup light rum (or non-alcoholic white rum)
1 cup dark rum (or non-alcoholic dark rum)
1 cup monk fruit sweetener (or granulated sugar)
1/2 cup orange juice
1/4 cup grenadine
juice of 1 lime
Directions
In a pitcher (or punch bowl if multiplying the recipe for larger gatherings), add the juices, rum (or non-alcoholic rum substitute), sweetener, and lime. Mix well to dissolve the sweetener.
Serve over ice in a Hurricane glass or other tall glass, and garnished with orange peel curls, maraschino cherries, fancy little umbrellas, etc. (optional).
